WaterWe’re an open book when it comes to talking about conservation and energy efficiency.

But with the residents of Cape Town in the midst of a water crisis, we wanted to share some tips on how you can conserve water in your own home. Although South Africa is an ocean away for many of us, we share the same planet. And we are in this together.

Below are some recommendations being made by the South African government for limiting household water consumption and use. If each of us made just one of these changes, it could make a world of difference when it comes to conserving water.

Fix leaks on your property.

Whether it’s a dripping faucet, and damp garden hose, the water heater or the refrigerator, call a plumber or check your maintenance manuals as soon as the problems is noticed. A small and slow drip can waste dozens of liters of water.

Use drinking water only for drinking, cooking and essential washing.

Think of how your water consumption habits change when a boil order is issued for temporary contamination at your local water reservoir. Using some of those conserving methods could help your daily reduction.

Only flush the toilet when necessary.

Everybody does it, but do you have to do it as often as you do?

Collect your shower, bath and basin water and re-use it to flush the toilet, water your garden or wash your car.

Only run washing machines and dishwashers with a full load.
